Spanish Acoustic Fingerstyle Comes to Suzhou

Spanish guitarist and composer Pipo Romero brings his distinctive take on acoustic guitar to Suzhou this October, joined by bassist Carlos Sánchez for an intimate duo performance.

Born in Cádiz, Romero has developed a style he calls Spanish Acoustic Fingerstyle, using steel-string acoustic guitar to blend Iberian and flamenco traditions with Mediterranean and transatlantic folk influences. His playing combines fingerstyle, flamenco, classical and even banjo techniques, with the guitar handling melody, rhythm and percussion at the same time.

Romero has taken that sound well beyond Spain, performing at venues and festivals including Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center in the US, Palais Montcalm in Canada, Budapest Jazz Festival, Cartagena Guitar Festival and World Music Festival@Taiwan. His albums have also reached the Top 10 of the World Music Charts Europe

There's even a Money Heist connection. Romero composed the music for the final scene of Netflix's Berlín, the spin-off from La Casa de Papel, with the track receiving a nomination from Spain's Academy of Music.

For the Suzhou show, he's joined by Spanish bassist Carlos Sánchez, adding another layer to music that moves between flamenco, folk, jazz and contemporary acoustic sounds.
